The most western point of the Savannah Way is the beachside city of Broome in Western Australia. Being on the west coast means the sun sets over the sea, resulting in a nightly ritual of sunset seekers heading to the beach, armed with drinks and nibblies and an atmosphere of relaxed contentment as the sun dips below the horizon, setting ablaze the sky with rich warm colour! There’s a whole lot more to Broome than just the sunsets and it’s easy to spend at least a few days exploring what’s on offer.
A peaceful moment of solitude at Cable Beach…
Sunset at Gantheaume Point
One of the unique attractions of Broome is the fact that the city is situated on a narrow peninsula, giving the opportunity to view both the sunrises and sunsets over the ocean! Sunrise can be every bit as spectacular as the sunsets… and a little less crowded!
Embracing the sunset on Cable Beach…
Broome has had a colourful history over the years, mostly revolving around the pearling industry. Remnants of history have been retained throughout the city, including some of the buildings in Chinatown. One of my favourite old buildings was the Sun Pictures Movie Theatre, still operating as an outdoor cinema.
The Broome Historical Museum is a must-see if you are visiting the area. The displays and information are fantastic and I walked away with a great appreciation for the all the hard work that has gone into making such a great historical record.
The famous Cable Beach Camel Rides…. a popular and well loved attraction of Broome.
The Port of Broome
Sunset at Gantheaume Point
In search of the Dinasour Footprints at Gantheaume Point…
The Northern Beaches of Broome were somewhat quiet in comparison to the very popular Cable Beach. The soft white sand and deep blue seas were amazing… and then I realised the beach was actually a bit busier than I initially noticed…
Hundreds of colourful shells came to life with a the clicky-clacky sound of little crabs scurrying up the rocks and along the sand. I was captivated by their antics!
Roebuck Bay on a cloudy morning… a spectacular cloudy morning!
A day trip to Cygnet Bay in the Dampier Peninsula was a great way to gain an appreciation of the process of cultivation of pearls and the pearling industry as it occurs today. If you do get up to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm I would highly recommend the restaurant and the pearl appreciation tour!
Even the cloudy days in Broome are beautiful… our last day relaxing at Cable Beach.
