Tonights blog post to celebrate Mount Isa’s 90th birthday is about one of the services offered in the town for the families living in very remote regions.  The Mount Isa School of the Air helps children in remote areas that don’t have access to regular school on a daily basis.  Approximately 150 families with a total of  about 220 children in Prep to year 10 participate in Mount Isa’s School of the Air.  The area extends from the Northern Territory border in the west, to Richmond in the East, Burketown in the North, Birdsville in the South, and Winton in the South-East.

The students are posted  printed curriculum papers supplemented by daily phone lessons to participate in a class and to access teacher support.  The students meet up every so often in Mount Isa for sports days and special occasions.  They even have access to participate in Scouts of the Air.

Tours are run at the Mount Isa School of the Air during the school term and it is well worth a visit.
