Part 3 is the final chapter of our Desert Adventure…. starting out with a whole lot of sand…
I think I would have to say the scalloped dunes were my favourites :)
Time for another digout… I think this was the one I got bogged in… too distracted looking at the scenery… I quickly handed the driving back over to Steve after my 10 minute episode of driving…lol
I love this next shot but I can’t take the credit for it… taken by Pete or Deb :)
Pete and Deb’s one and only bogging!! but is was a good one!!
The horizon seems to disappear into nothing… and I can certainly understand the concept of mirages after seeing them for myself… no water here…. but sure did look like it in the distance…
Poeppel’s Corner is where 3 states intersect: Queensland, South Australia and Northern Territory.
Me and my wonderful hubby :)
Left turn and a just a 16okm to go to our final destination of Birdsville
Time to adjust the tyre pressures as we get back on firm ground.
Kinda glad we were here in the dry… could be a bit of a challenge in the wet…
Our final campsite on the Desert Trail…and yet another great location to spend a night.
Another yummy roast in the camp oven…
We were treated to yet another spectacular sunset… I could never get tired of them… every sunrise and sunset was unique and incredible.
So I mentioned in part one that we did quite a bit of preparation for the trip and special mention to Steve for his tireless efforts in getting the vehicle decked out to be a real home away from home… I think we had enough lights to be identified as a small township from space… and they sure did a great job of lighting up the camp when we needed them.
Our last night of the amazing stars in the desert and a chance to play with sparklers…just for fun…
There were always lots of telltale signs that we certainly weren’t alone in the desert. We were sharing it with loads of creatures with interesting footprints and markings in the sand.
And then along came ‘Big Red’. We could see a bunch of vehicles at the approach and contemplated which track we would take. Both our vehicles made it up in one hit! Must have been all that practice on the other 1,099 dunes beforehand!
We can almost smell the Birdsville Bakery by this stage!
First point of call in Birdsville is none other than the Birdsville Hotel :)
The first sign of phone reception in 5 days… sure didn’t miss it (but you wouldn’t think so from the intense concentration in the photo that Pete snuck of Deb and I..)
On the final stretch back home from Birdsville after an incredible time away. All that planning and preparation was well worth it :)
